Material details
Wood-Filled PLA contains genuine wood particles, and they change everything about how a print reads. The surface comes out matte and organic, layer lines look like grain rather than defects, and the finished piece does not look like plastic pretending to be timber — it looks like timber. It also sands and takes wood stain, which no other filament in this range will do.
What Wood-Filled PLA is good for
The wood content is what makes the post-processing work. Sanding raises a surface that behaves like a fine-grained timber, and stain soaks into the particles rather than sitting on top — so a printed frame can be finished the same way a wooden one would be. Printing hotter or cooler also shifts the shade darker or lighter, which makers use deliberately for two-tone effects within a single print.
How Wood-Filled PLA prints
The manufacturer’s published window is a nozzle at 190–230 °C and a bed at 35–65 °C with adhesive, at speeds up to 300 mm/s. The wood fibre thickens the melt, so a wider nozzle — 0.5 or 0.6 mm — is the comfortable choice and makes a partial blockage far less likely than a 0.4.
One habit worth adopting: do not leave the filament sitting hot in the nozzle between prints. Wood particles scorch if they are held at temperature, and a scorched plug is the usual cause of a jam on this material. Unload it when you are finished, or purge before you start.
What Wood-Filled PLA will not do
Read this before you buy it for the wrong job
It is not structural. Its impact strength of 32 ± 1.4 kJ/m² is under half Core PLA’s 66.2, and at 7.5% elongation at break it snaps rather than bends. The wood particles interrupt the polymer, and the mechanical properties pay for the look.
It is also still PLA outdoors: heat deflection at 55 °C and no UV resistance, so a planter or a garden sign will chalk and distort over an Australian summer. And unlike real timber it will not tolerate being left damp — the wood content makes it thirstier than plain PLA, and a wet spool prints badly.

Every Wood-Filled shade is the same polymer and the same wood loading with the same settings — only the tone changes. Because temperature shifts the shade within a spool as well, you can print a two-tone piece from a single colour by varying the nozzle across the model. Printer compatibility
Wood-Filled PLA is 1.75mm 3D printer filament on a standard 1 kg spool, so it runs on any FDM printer that takes 1.75 mm — Bambu Lab, Prusa, Creality, Elegoo, Anycubic and the rest. The practical requirement is nozzle size rather than nozzle material: 0.5 or 0.6 mm avoids the partial blockages a 0.4 can suffer with fibre-filled filament. The spool label states a diameter tolerance of ±0.02 mm, and the filament tip is secured before packing so the spool does not tangle mid-print.

Storage, drying and shelf life
Wood fibre holds water, so this is thirstier than plain PLA and shows it sooner. A damp spool prints with visible steam at the nozzle, a rough furry surface and poor layer bonding — and on a material chosen for its finish, the surface is the part you cannot afford to lose.
Every spool ships sealed with desiccant. Keep it that way between prints and drying will not come up. If a spool has been open through a humid season, the manufacturer’s figure is 50 ± 5 °C for 8 hours in a dryer or blast oven, with storage below 20% relative humidity. Common questions about Wood-Filled PLA
Is there really wood in it?
Yes — genuine wood particles blended into PLA. That is why it sands, stains and smells faintly of sawdust while printing, and why the surface reads as grain rather than as a printed texture.
Can I stain or varnish a wood-filled print?
Yes, and it is the main reason to choose it. Wood stain soaks into the particles rather than sitting on the surface, so the colour goes into the part. Sand first with progressive grits, then stain, then wax or varnish as you would on timber.
What nozzle size should I use?
0.5 or 0.6 mm. A 0.4 will print it, but the wood fibre thickens the melt and a partial blockage part-way through a long print is a real risk. The wider nozzle also lays down more material, which suits the chunky, carved look the material does best.
Why did my print jam?
Almost always heat soak. Wood particles scorch if the filament sits hot in the nozzle between prints, and the scorched material forms a plug. Unload the filament when you finish, purge before you start, and keep to the published temperature range.
How do I get different shades from one spool?
Change the nozzle temperature. Hotter extrusion darkens the wood; cooler keeps it lighter. Varying it across the height of a print produces a deliberate two-tone effect from a single colour, which is a trick this material is almost alone in offering.
Is it strong enough for a functional part?
No. Impact strength of 32 kJ/m² and 7.5% elongation at break make it one of the more brittle materials here. Print shelves, brackets and anything load-bearing in PLA+ or PETG.
How much can I print from a 1 kg spool?
At a density of 1.26 g/cm³, a 1 kg spool of 1.75 mm filament holds roughly 330 metres — the same as Core PLA. A wider nozzle uses it faster per print, so plan accordingly on large pieces.
